The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but that it was impossible to avoid joining in. Within thirty seconds any pretense was always unnecessary.

The Amazingly Conclusive Best Of 2008 Awards — The Year Is Over. Who Did The Best Stuff?

Oh Noez. We Have No Moneyz.

Oh Noez. We Have No Moneyz.

The year is over. Everyone is pissed because they are back at work. No one has any money. Everyone will be unemployed this time next year. But, hey, cheer up. We still had a good 2008 right? Here’s the stuff that I thought was the best.

So there you have it. 2008 is gone forever never to return. Those are the things worth mentioning (plus tons more I missed). I’m glad I don’t have to do this end of year bollocks for another 12 months because it takes some thought. And I hate thinking.

Enjoy and all that.

The Ten Songs That Make Me Who I Am: #1 “Just Like Heaven” by The Cure

The first time I heard this song was actually a cover (*embarassed face*) but this recording by this band is what I consider to be floorless. It invokes so many different emotions everytime I listen to it. For me this is still the pinnacle of all the songs I’ve ever heard and I’m still waiting for a record that can beat it.

Literally the most honest love song you could ever want to hear with the most upbeat tune considering the lyrical content. It’s all I need to say really.

I just couldn’t pick a Beatles song really. I could have had the whole of Abbey Road on here but at the end of the day it was a toss up between “Help!”/”Here Comes The Sun”/”Eleanor Rigby”/”I Want You”/”Lady Madonna”/”Ticket To Ride”/”Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”……….. I picked Eleanor Rigby because it’s so haunting. (The video is for audio purposes only by the way).

The Ten Songs That Make Me Who I Am: #4 “Digital Love” by Daft Punk

When you’re a born-and-bred, narrow minded rocker it takes a good song to open your ears to a whole wealth of other music and Daft Punk probably introduced a good portion of the worlds youth to dance, electro and 70’s disco all at the same time.

I spent a lot of years enjoying music from the whole AbsolutePunk.net scene which was totally my thing. New Found Glory, The Starting Line, Allister, Home Grown, Motion City Soundtrack. The pop-punk scene was always my thing really throughout high-school. I kind of grew out of those bands in the past 2 or so years but if there’s one band that’s grown with me I have to credit Anberlin.

Quick Recap:

  • Little Lies - Fleetwood Mac
  • Say What You Want - Texas
  • Atomic - Blondie
  • Enjoy The Silence - Depeche Mode
  • Hit Or Miss - New Found Glory

Fleetwood Mac’s Greatest Hits was another CD I just bought because it was cheap. I was going through a phase where I do no research on a band, I just buy CD’s based on price. If you like it, you like it. If you hate it, you’ve lost what, £3 or so? Fleetwood Mac was a name my Dad brandished around a lot and upon about the 6th spin I finally got them. And subsequently picked up the other records on vinyl.
